The 9-metre octagonal pole is the most searched and most purchased height in India right now — and for good reason. It hits the sweet spot for residential roads, commercial complexes, and medium-width highways. But "9 metres" on a quote sheet tells you almost nothing. What matters is everything underneath that number.
The Specs That Actually Matter
Here's what a standard, well-made 9-metre octagonal pole should look like. These aren't sales numbers — they're the baseline you should be comparing against.
155 mm
Bottom diameter
70 mm
Top diameter
260×260 mm
Base plate size
3 mm
Sheet thickness
65 µm+
Galvanization coat
12 mm
Base plate thickness
The base plate and sheet thickness are where budget manufacturers quietly cut corners. A thinner sheet saves them money; it costs you a pole that deforms under its first monsoon-season wind load.
7 Questions to Ask Before You Sign Anything
Most buyers ask "what's the price?" and "when can you deliver?" That's how you end up with substandard infrastructure. These are the questions that matter:
What steel grade are you using?
Ask for IS:2062 compliance. Reject vague answers like "mild steel" without a grade certificate.
What is the actual galvanization thickness in microns?
65 µm is the public-spec minimum. Coastal or high-humidity zones should demand 85 µm. Ask for the galvanizing certificate, not just a verbal assurance.
What wind speed is this pole rated for?
Most good 9m poles are rated for 160–300 km/h depending on model. Match this to your site's wind zone (IS:875 Part
Can you provide material test certificates and weld procedure qualifications?Any serious manufacturer has these. Hesitation here is a red flag.
Are anchor bolt dimensions and base plate drawings included?
Foundation design depends on this. Getting this wrong means digging up and redoing the civil work.
Is the pole smart-city ready — does it have cable routing and mounting provision for CCTV or sensors?
Even if you don't need it today, retrofitting later costs more. Future-proof for ₹500 extra per pole.
What is the warranty period and what does it actually cover?
A 5-year structural warranty with a written service clause is very different from a vague "we stand behind our product."
